Moxibustion is a Chinese Medicine technique whereby dried mugwort is ignited and held approximately an inch above the patient’s skin. The purpose of the procedure is to warm cold or stagnant conditions. Another form of Moxibustion utilises both the needle and Moxa, where the tip of the needle is encased in Moxa and then ignited. Heat is generated directly to the Acupoint through the needle or the surrounding area. A single treatment typically lasts 10 – 15 minutes.
The purpose of a Cupping session is to stimulate the flow of Qi and Blood within the superficial muscle layers. During the therapy the Practitioner places a glass cup over an affected area. Air is withdrawn from the cup using heat, making the skin swell into the evacuated space. Drawing the skin upwards is believed to open pores, helping to stimulate the flow of Blood. Depending on the condition being treated, cups are left in place 5 – 10 minutes.
